RIM to Drop BlackBerry OS

September 29th, 2010 by Arjan Olsder Posted in Platforms: BlackBerry | No Comments »

It was to be expected. RIM announced that the company will depart from BlackBerry OS. BlackBerry Tablet OS, the OS for their Playbook, will be replacing it.

It was already a bold move from RIM to announce a totally new OS for the Playbook, but now it makes sense. The OS built by QNX is much lighter than that of RIM and has been trialed and tested in the automotive and aviation industries. What RIM will do with the current content catalogue on App World is unclear though rumors say Playbook is able to run a big part of it.
