RIM has just opened up BBM to developers that wish to include the messaging service into their BlackBerry apps. BlackBerry is however not opening up the API for usage from other platforms.
The new API is pretty extensive, allowing developers to read through user profiles and update them as well as host chats within your app. The API is at the moment limited to Java.
