It seems the rush for tablets is cooling down a little as tablet sales are expected to drop a massive 30% in the first quarter of 2012. Digitimes calculated the dip in sales based on the number of deliveries from vendors in Taiwan.
90% of the tablets sold worldwide originate from the Foxconn and Quanta plants in Taiwan. Those two are expected to send out 13.51 million tablets this quarter while the total amount of new sku’s for this quarter is expected to be 15 million. Year-on-year that’s a +77,6%, but compared to the last quarter of 2011, sales drop 30.6%.
There are a few reasons sales are down since last quarter. First off, we passed the holiday season, so most families have spent their savings and Christmas bonuses already. Another reason might be for consumers to sit and wait for the new iPad announcements from Apple.
Digitimes also provided some insights into the tablets that will be sold this quarter. About 11 million of them will be iPad 2 models and about 4 million tablets will be based on Android. Of those Androids, 1.5 million will be Kindle Fire’s.
Congratulations
