Intel and Samsung have launched version 1.0 of the new Tizen operating system for smartphones. Tizen is a combination of MeeGo (once developed by Intel and Nokia) and Bada OS from Samsung. The whole system is based on the Linux kernel. Developers can start downloading the Tizen SDK’s, but have to realize there isn’t any Tizen hardware… yet.
Intel and Samsung have released SDK’s for both Windows and Ubunto environments and packed an emulator with it. The emulator supports apps for Tizen devices running on 512MB RAM and a 1280×720 screen. The look and feel of the OS is largely based on Samsung’s Bada interface.
Though no Tizen devices have been announced yet, the strategy of merging Bada and MeeGo is likely to mean Samsung will be replacing Bada OS in the long run.
